Elite runner excited by the challenge and layout of Toowoomba Marathon presented by Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport

The Toowoomba community is coming forward in bunches with the Garden City fielding up to 150 volunteers to support the delivery of the Toowoomba Marathon presented by Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport.

Events Management Queensland CEO Ben Mannion said volunteers were the backbone to major events bringing with them enthusiasm, energy and a great attitude because they really want to be there to help.

“The volunteers for Toowoomba Marathon presented by Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport will enjoy a variety of roles from on course operation, registration and kit collection, race day bag drop, finish line and welcoming runners in the final recovery zone.

“By volunteering individuals not only support the community but meet like-minded people, learn new skills, and gain some great experience for future employment… but importantly it’s fun,” Mr Mannion said.

Australian Industry Trade College (AITC) student Emilile Coleman has had minimal experience in the volunteer area but managed to encourage her friend, their respective mums and two teachers from the college to volunteer on race weekend.

Emilie readily admits she isn’t a runner herself but thought it would be good to help those running by helping out at the aid stations on course.

Volunteers will be rewarded with the opportunity to meet hundreds of people from all over the country and be a part of the exciting return of the Toowoomba Marathon while giving back to the community.

An avid runner who will be tackling the ASICS half marathon on Sunday 5 May, Renay Marshall has also put her hand up to volunteer on the Saturday in a capacity where she can engage with the participants.

“I normally opt to help out in the radio tents or an information booth where I can chat with participants while they’re waiting, answer general questions and encourage them to read the event guide – which is always full of useful information.

“I volunteer at lots or running events including the local parkrun – it’s a great way to meet new friends and engage with people,” Renay said.

The Toowoomba Marathon presented by Wellcamp Airport and the shorter distance events are back with a vengeance after a four-year hiatus with over 2000 runners expected to sign up for the challenge.

With courses designed to take in the historic sites, artistic streetscapes and colourful parks and gardens, the Toowoomba Marathon presented by Wellcamp Airport will host a race for the recreational runner, elite athlete and all ages and abilities.

Entrants can choose from the Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport 42.195km marathon, the ASICS half marathon, Vanderbilt Private Equity 10km or Toowoomba Region 5km run or the Toowoomba Chronicle 2km race for the juniors.
